In the famous Winnipeg River and Red River systems sturgeon can reach great sizes. They are common is the 15-25 pound range but can reach over 100 pounds. The modern Manitoba record Lake Sturgeon is 78.5 inches caught in 1996 on the Red River. Sturgeon fishing is all catch and release in Manitoba.

Sturgeon Fishing tips: In Manitoba the Lake Sturgeon is the common species. The Winnipeg River, Red River and some northern rivers and lakes have increasing populations accessible by fisherman.

Sturgeon are actually great tasting. The aboriginal people clean the fish into steak size chunks. They boil the meat to eliminate any fatty oils and then they fry it in butter. The meat taste very similar to alligator tail.
